PlatinumJewelry.biz - Carat Weight Quality Carat Weight Diamonds are measured in carat weight. One carat is equal to 1/5th of a gram. Sometimes weights are quoted in "points" -- or hundredths of a carat. For example, a “50 point” diamond weighs ˝ of a carat. Since larger diamonds are found in nature much less frequently, they are generally more valuable than smaller stones. A two-carat diamond of a given quality is therefore always more expensive than two one-carat diamonds of the same quality. To get a sense for the relative size of round diamonds, look at the chart below. (Remember, this chart is not to scale – the size will depend on the resolution of your monitor!). Beneath each picture is the approximate size of the diamond in millimeters. This should help you get a sense for what size diamond you wish to purchase.
Now that you have learned about diamonds, you should have a better sense for what you are looking for. Opals International
