PlatinumJewelry.biz - Carat Weight Quality

Carat Weight

Diamonds are measured in carat weight. One carat is equal to 1/5th of a gram. Sometimes weights are quoted in "points" -- or hundredths of a carat. For example, a \9350 point\94 diamond weighs \BD of a carat.

Since larger diamonds are found in nature much less frequently, they are generally more valuable than smaller stones. A two-carat diamond of a given quality is therefore always more expensive than two one-carat diamonds of the same quality.

To get a sense for the relative size of round diamonds, look at the chart below. (Remember, this chart is not to scale \96 the size will depend on the resolution of your monitor!). Beneath each picture is the approximate size of the diamond in millimeters. This should help you get a sense for what size diamond you wish to purchase.

Now that you have learned about diamonds, you should have a better sense for what you are looking for.
