PlatinumJewelry.biz - Diamond Color Quality Diamond Color Diamonds boast an entire range of colors, from faint yellow or brown to rare pinks, blues and even greens. The best color for a diamond is a lack of color. It is the totally colorless diamond that allows white light to pass through it effortlessly, dispersed as rainbows of color. For fine diamonds, grading laboratories use a color scale that ranges from D (completely colorless) to Z (strong yellow). Since diamonds with strongly noticeable tints are not used for common jewelry, you will mostly see diamonds with color grades falling between D and M on this scale.
Diamonds in the range to D to F are the most valuable and have virtually no color tone. Diamonds in the G to I range are still almost colorless – with the naked eye, most people still cannot detect color tones in these stones – but are less expensive. Stones of J color and below have enough yellow color tone that most people can detect it with the naked eye. These stones can still make fine jewelry, and they cost much less than stones of a higher color grade.
You may also see diamonds with color ratings of N, O, P, or letters further along in the alphabet. These diamonds have a noticeable tint to them, and are not recommended for high-quality jewelry. Opals International
