"I've looked through several catalogs and nothing really jumped out at me." "I have a vision for a ring in my mind but I can't seem to find what I really want anywhere." "I wish could have more choices for my next piece of jewelry."

These are common customer sentiments. Most customers today are tired of being confined to catalog jewelry pieces or Mall Jewelry which looks the same at all the stores and often made in "faraway nations" that utilize "slave labor". These other jewelry sources contain the same old products that inevitably reflect ideas other than their own. Custom Platinum Jewelry is even more difficult to find someone, because the majority of Jewelry Stores DO NOT have the capability to make handcrafted or even cast Platinum Jewelry Designs. That means they cannot help you or again must order from a catalog or send waxes to large NYC casters - thus you lose all control the jewelry design process.

We hear often from customers who have creative, personalized ideas for platinum or gold jewelry, but are frustrated because they can't find anything on the market that fits their image or anyone that will have the patience to work them on a custom designed special piece of jewelry. At PlatinumJewelry.biz (parent company Opals International Jewelers, Inc.) one of the things we take the most pride in is our ability and willingness to make the customer's vision a reality, working closely with individual customers to design a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. It may be from scratch or it may be a drastic re-styling of an exisiting piece or pieces of jewelry that you are tired of wearing or have sentimental meaning (like grandmas jewelry handed down to you)

With the growth and expansion of our Internet business, the benefits of being able to custom-design a piece of jewelry through online communication (and phone/fax/mail) have become obvious. While it may not be practical for you to physically come into our store to tell us your idea or view the piece in progress, we are still committed to designing your customized creation. Since 1994 we have literally done THOUSANDS of CUSTOM Jewelry creations via the Internet. We "invented" Custom Jewelry Designing Online in 1994. Our expertise in the arena is UNMATCHED today! We have developed a systematic line of communication so that, from the comfort of your own home, you can tell us what you are looking for, approve an initial drawing, and then review wax models, metal prototypes, and the final product. Step-by-step no surprises process where you have the ability to make changes as we go.....even your local jewelry designer will NOT give you the "personal" touch like we do from afar! This is all accomplished thru email images, phone calls, faxes, and a precise willingness to work "back and forth" until you are 100% satisfied. YOU work with us through the entire process until your piece is finished, the way YOU desire. All work is done INHOUSE by our team of designers and master jewelers with over 100 years of jewelry making experience. Information gathering is the first step - back and forth - via email or phone, then a detailed cost estimate will be given to you by Jeff Thomson.

If you are ready NOW - Send us a preliminary email at: gems@customfinejewelry.com with as much ideas, or information that you can give us. OR Call toll free 1-800-376-6725 to tell us your dream piece. In addition Fax ideas can be sent to 405-495-6611. The details, issues and information that we need from you (FROM YOU) initially may include:

  • What type of jewelry (ring, earrings, pendant, etc.) are you looking for? This also includes the metal or metals you desire, any textures, artwork, etc. etc. We work in Silver, Platinum, and all Gold, we can mix metals as well. Do you like art deco ? antique / vintage designs ? or wild contemporary jewelry ? heavy versus light ? filigree or engraved rings ? How big or small do you want it to be ? These are all important factors in your custom jewelry design project.
  • What stones do you want? What size of gemstone are you looking for? What specific color hue/intensity do you prefer? What shape do you want the stone to be? Most important with gemstone is quality and this translates into BUDGET, you need to know or let us know what your maximum budget will be for this center stone, that helps us locate the BEST stone for your design and budget. Most designs should be DONE AROUND a main stone or theme - therefore the SIZE is important for wearability, pricing/cost and appearance.

We will then reply to your email with additional questions, ideas and clarifications. After we have some BASIC idea of what you are looking for, we will send you a series of digital images of previous custom designs (to show you our work or some facet of what you seek) and gemstone images for your approvals. Once we have a VERY GOOD idea of what you want we will arrange to send you GEMSTONES (or DIAMONDS) and design models meeting your criteria and proposed design ideas. This step is usually after a Price Quote is given to you. If we send stones for your approval - we even enclose the return US Mail Registered packaging to ensure easy and safe return to us. See details of our "memo to you" process at the following link: http://www.platinumjewelry.biz/memo-diamonds.html for more details on this process.

The most important phase in your custom design process is to get the BEST stone(s), then design around the stone(s) and in most cases this center stone(s) is the largest expense of the creation. So, over email and through telephone conversation, we will together create a more definite, detailed vision for your custom jewelry. It is best to be as specific as possible about your idea and realistic about your budget; if possible, a scanned or faxed 405-495-6611 sketch is extremely useful, or mailed in hand drawings are just as good.

Questions to be answered in this stage include the following:

  • How do you want the stone set in the piece--how high above the ring band do you want the stone to sit? Prongs or Bezel or semi-bezel etc.
  • What kind of setting do you want? (For example, do you want white gold, yellow gold, platinum or silver? 14k or 18k gold?) Do you want the metal textured in any way? Do you want mixtures, two tone, 18k yellow with 14k white ?
  • Are you looking for a contemporary or traditional style? Can you draw us a simple sketch or rendition, or send us or email us a picture from a catalog of what kinds of designs you do like. (we won't copy someone else's work but may be able to do a style of our own similar)
  • Do you want additional stones on the side of your main stone(s)? What kind, color, and shape? Such as diamonds or sapphires on the side of a Black Opal
  • For rings, what is your ring size? How thick do you want the ring band? And how wide do want it ? And do you want it to taper, comfort fit, or skinny wide.
  • For necklaces, what type of chain do you have in mind? The bail (where chain goes through) on top do you want it to be stiff, dangle, swivel, spin, reverse etc. Another example of detailed stone layouts in green putty, metal models and final designs as per our clients unique ideas. NOTE: Below the metal models had "cutout" hearts under the main diamond and the Final product has a "wave" cutout - an example of a "drastic" change made from an approved metal model that we had to redo at client expense.

Equipped with this information, our jewelers will make a wax representation that the jewelers will use to create the final product. We will make a digital image in several angles of the wax mold and send you an image. The reason we do wax moldings is so that they can be changed without using costly metal, so be sure to tell us your suggestions or ideas for changes.

NOTE: The design above is hand made Platinum and Diamond Anniversary Ring - Most of our Platinum creations are hand fabricated here and usually we create a wax to show you first - then copy it in SILVER -- then make whatever changes the client wishes and then handmake in Platinum exactly as the final silver MODEL has been approved. Fabrication an art whereby the metal is rolled out, pounded beaten and shaped, soldered - bended and molded into the intricate custom design jewelry you want ! Just as custom jewelry was created thousands of years ago by the Egyptians or the Incas!

In some cases (usually gold) the piece will be fabricated by hand (no silver model) instead of a wax image, this is usually done in the final metal and usually only after we are very sure of the final design concept. The image you receive will look something like this with the blue stuff being hard wax, metal (copy) silver model or carved exactly to your specifications - this image will ultimately be a completed product after any changes that you desire necessary.

After hearing how you would like the design changed or altered, we will design another wax image, or just modify this one to accommodate your changes and send updated digital images via email or in some cases send the wax to you for closer inspection. This process will continue until the design meets your criteria. After you authorize the wax mold, our jewelers will create the final product, send more images BEFORE we set the stones in order to get your final approvals or changes. Then if it is all fine we will set the stones, polish and take final pictures of YOUR custom creation. We also prepare an insurance replacement appraisal at NO CHARGE and supply the information that you need to get the piece insured with our insurance company Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company. Then we will ship the piece to you.
